This paper argues a new grand bargain is needed to rescue the European Union from the negative political, economic and social impacts of the 2007 financial crisis. The author reviews the current situation in the EU, highlighting the consequences of the financial crisis as well as preexisting problems that have undermined the project. He then contends that the EU needs a new grand bargain that does not just concentrate on saving the common currency but also more effectively manages interdependence; creates the conditions for sustainable development and more cohesive societies; strengthens democracy; and turns regional integration into a positive-sum game.
