This brief examines the state of Syria's economy three years after the break out of civil war in the country in 2011. The author argues that a war economy is becoming entrenched across the country, one that is creating significant new economic networks and business activities that feed off the conflict's violence and incentivize those making money from the conflict to prolong it. He also states that the Syrian economy is fragmenting, something that could lead to new power centers that might clash with a future central government, but could also provide a part of the solution to the crisis.
