This brief examines the impact of natural gas finds in the Eastern Mediterranean on Turkey-EU relations. The authors first examine the state of EU-Turkey relations, especially Turkey’s role in promoting greater EU energy security and its EU accession process. They then highlight the importance of solving the dispute over Cyprus for improvements in Turkey-EU relations and how gas finds off Cyprus have made this more difficult. The authors end the piece by suggesting that relations could still improve if a gas-cooperation scenario involving Israel, Cyprus and Turkey provided strong enough incentives for all parties to solve the Cyprus problem.
