This note provides an overview of the history of traditional military rifles, and the way they have been developed to meet the needs of a variety of military and law-enforcement users. The author argues that contrary to expectations, traditional military rifles have not been fully replaced by military assault rifles and that they and their caliber of ammunition are likely to remain in production and use for many decades to come.
