In light of the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan and a trend of escalating violence, this paper argues that the country needs continued international support and the new government in Kabul needs to reinvigorate the state’s commitment to the rule of law. The author then presents case studies for Faryab, Kunar, Paktia and Kandahar provinces, each of which contain an examination of the respective province's history of conflict, conflicts trends in 2013, insurgent strategies, and the province's prospects for 2014 and 2015.
