This brief assesses the acquisition and use of man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) by anti-Assad forces in Syria. After first providing an overview of the age, models, conditions and capabilities of MANPADS circulating in the country, the brief then assesses the provenance of these systems, including possibly Sudan. Finally, the text evaluates the implications of MANPADS proliferation in Syria, both locally and within the context of global counter-MANPADS efforts.
