This commentary discusses how the EU addresses the issue of corruption within states which are in the process of acceding to the Union. First, the author examines how the EU failed to effectively deal with the corruption in Bulgaria and Romania before these states joined the Union in 2007. He then examines the lessons learned from this experience and how they could be applied to countries with similar problems who may wish to join to EU in the future, such as Turkey.
