This report examines 1) the circumstances that led to the 22 May 2014 coup in Thailand, and 2) what the consequences of military rule might be over time. In the last case, the report worries about the stifling of dissent, which is precluding a frank dialogue on the Kingdom’s future, and the shift in power from elected representatives to appointed officials, which may trigger yet another round of public violence.
