This commentary discusses the growing struggle between Turkey’s moderate Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) government and the Gülen movement, a patriotic and nationalist brand of Sufi Islam. In particular, the author examines 1) the roots of the conflict; 2) the factors that led to the re-emergence of the rift between the two actors, and 3) the implications this could have for Turkish democracy.
