This commentary provides an overview of the challenges human rights defenders (HRD) face in Nepal. The authors particularly discuss 1) the political background of Nepal and the absence of strong legal mechanisms in the protection of human rights; 3) tools used by the state to defame HRDs, and 4) the transitional justice discourse in Nepal. Finally, the authors provide recommendations on how HRD protection could be better enforced in Nepal.
