This report provides an overview of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). More specifically, it provides chapters on 1) the group's origins and evolution; 2) how its goals and methods compare to those of al Qaeda and the Taliban; 3) the various activities it conducts (military operations, raising funds, governing, providing services, and media outreach); and 4) what the US and its allies can do to blunt this murderous group.
