This paper analyzes foreign direct investment (FDI) activities of Chinese multinational enterprises in Italy. The author contends that Italy is considered an attractive destination for Chinese investors due to 1) its large market and strategic position as a gateway to the Mediterranean and 2) and the view held by these investors that it is a valuable source of strategic assets in both traditional and advanced industries. The author also examines a number of case studies that illustrate the strategies followed by Chinese companies in Italy and outlines the main implications for the country that arise from Chinese FDI.
