This brief analyzes the possible risks of violence and insecurity as well as opportunities for long-term stability that could result from Sri Lanka's January 2015 presidential elections. The authors state that during the election campaign, a strong opposition has emerged that could also lead to political change in the country, increasing the chances for stability and post-war reconciliation over the long-term. However, they also suggest that the sudden emergence of this opposition increases the chances for election-related violence and electoral malpractice. Finally, they offer recommendations for international actors concerned with stability in Sri Lanka on how to prevent political violence in the country prior to the elections.
