Following Russia's 2014 intervention in Ukraine and the resulting international sanctions against Moscow, this paper discusses the Kremlin's turn towards greater economic cooperation with China. The author argues that the relationship between China and Russia is likely to become stronger and Moscow’s dependency on Beijing will grow. He also believes that although China will not replace Europe in terms of economic importance, it could provide a lifeline that will keep Putin’s system going.
