This paper provides an overview of a conference on the role of sanctions as instruments of coercive diplomacy. In particular, the conference focused on 1) the distinction between different forms of coercion from the perspective of international law as well as the compatibility and legitimacy of different sanctions under international law; 2) the different actors involved in international sanctions regimes; 3) sanctions and their relationship with human rights; and 4) the implementation of sanctions and the principle of proportionality, the impact of sanctions on treaties of commerce and contracts, the effectiveness of sanctions, and political sanctions as instruments of strategic competition.
