This paper discusses the feasibility of establishing European Unemployment Insurance (EUI) in the EU’s Economic and Monetary Union area as well as the potential effectiveness of an EUI to cushion the impact of economic downturns. In general, the author contends that the EUI would be a feasible and effective tool to deal with economic crises and that if an EUI had been in place during the 2008 global financial crisis, it would have promote economic stability in the EU.
