This paper analyzes the implementation and effect of the 2006 Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA) nine years after its signing by the government of Sudan and the Eastern Front (EF) rebel groups. More specifically, the authors focus on 1) the role the government of Sudan and the EF groups have played in the implementation of the ESPA; 2) the impact the ESPA has had on the people of Eastern Sudan and how it has affected men and women differently; 3) the challenges facing human security in the region; and 4) the prospects for development in Eastern Sudan. The main findings include that the ESPA has not eliminated the root causes of conflict in the region, nor has it lead to equitable development as many ordinary people have not seen the benefits of the region's growing economy.
