This report takes stock of the Malay Muslim insurgency in Southern Thailand over the last two years. It concludes that although the peace dialogue launched by the Thai government in 2013 was hurried and mismanaged, it did change the political nature of the insurgency and highlighted what both sides needed to address in order to further the cause of peace. The report’s authors then describe how the military coup in May 2014 led to a decline in insurgent violence, but there are indications that local militants have subsequently expanded their operations in the country, primarily because they doubt the military government's willingness to compromise with them.
