This is the fourth and final report of the International Crisis Group series on the conflict in Russia's North Caucasus region. In this report, the authors focus on the economic situation as well as social services and infrastructure in the region. More specifically, they look at 1) the economic situation in seven North Caucasian Republics; 2) the role of agriculture; 3) health care provision and education; and 4) the impact of corruption on economic development. They argue that the continuing violence as well as the omnipresent corruption, ineffective management and unresolved land issues impede the region’s chance for economic growth.
