This paper reviews the political and security crises that shook Macedonia in 2015, including the revelation of an illegal wiretapping program seemingly directed at those opposed to the governing party and a skirmish on May 9, 2015 in ethnically mixed Kumanovo, between police and ethnic-Albanian gunmen, many from Kosovo. The authors stress that both of these crises could escalate and need to be contained and that while another civil war in the Balkans is not imminent, the threat to regional stability is there. The paper concludes that Macedonia is in urgent need of political reform and calls on the country’s leaders and international partners to take strong action to help address the country's problems.
