This brief takes stock of Venezuela’s socio-economic health in the wake of Hugo Chávez’s death, the country’s dubious economic policies, and the recent collapse of oil prices. Unsurprisingly, the report card is grim, especially in terms of 1) lost incomes; 2) major shortages of essential foods, medicines and other basic goods; and 3) a breakdown in public health services. Indeed, if relief isn’t forthcoming soon, the country faces a humanitarian disaster of regional-level proportions.
