This article examines migration trends and policy between 2003 and 2015 in Morocco. More specifically, the author identifies and examines three periods of migration and policy in Morocco: 1) the first period (2002-2005) which saw Morocco adopt its first law on migration aimed at reducing irregular migration from the country and to fight against human trafficking between Africa and Europe; 2) the second (2006-2010) which saw the number of irregular migrants crossing through Morocco drop to its lowest level since 1990; and 3) the third period (2010-) which saw migration levels increase again following the Arab Spring. A key finding of the article is that even if countries like Morocco do all they can to collaborate with EU migration policy, this will not help reduce irregular migration to the Europe without significant changes to global approaches to migration.
