The authors of this commentary lay out a strategy that they believe will reap the rewards of closer ties with Iran while minimizing the potential negatives of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In particular, the strategy specifies how the US should 1) set out the conditions needed to implement and enforce the JCPOA; 2) work with Arab partners to counter Iranian actions that work against US interests; 3) reassure Israel and work more closely with Tel Aviv to counter Iran’s nuclear capabilities; 4) cooperate with Tehran in areas of common interest; and 5) leverage the recent nuclear deal to strengthen broader non-proliferation efforts and advance US global leadership.
