This issue of the RAD features three articles that focus on sustainability in the Russian Arctic, particularly in the regions of Murmansk, Chukotka and the Sakha Republic. The first article explores how local authorities in the mining town of Kirovsk, Murmansk are working with federal and regional governments to diversify the economy of a single-industry town. The second article then examines the officially-sanctioned attempts to urbanize the Chukota peninsula, which is provoking parts of its population to return to their traditional coastal villages. Finally, the last article considers why so many individuals in the Sakha Republic become entrepreneurs, which they see as their best option for survival.
