This paper gauges the influence International Organizations (IOs) have over global migration politics, particularly in the Mediterranean region. More specifically, the text’s author first reviews two main challenges that IOs face -- 1) current refugee/migration governance in the Mediterranean is EU-driven and risk averse, and 2) even though regional forums have been put in place to deal with migration-related problems, they remain mainly state-driven. The author then goes on to explore the role IOs play in migration governance and to measure their actual ability to frame an alternative narrative towards international protection and migration. (It's an alternative narrative, of course, that is particularly applicable to EU members.) Next, the author highlights the pluses and minuses of working with Frontex on Europe’s migration problems. Finally, she recommends ways that IOs can further improve transnational migration governance in the Mediterranean region.
