This paper explores the extent to which old and new realities are impacting regional and cross-regional migration flows across the Mediterranean basin. It also analyzes the human smuggling routes now being used between Libya and Italy and in the Eastern Mediterranean. In the last case, the paper's authors contemplate the 'confined' routes now being used, the growing overlap between smuggling and trafficking activities, and what can be done to deal with trafficking networks operating across the region.
