In this testimony, CNAS’ Shawn Brimley discusses how the US can maintain its global advantage in military-technical capabilities. The author 1) points to the proliferation of the technologies used to support America's military position as the reason other countries are closing the capabilties gap with the US; 2) examines some of the trends in geopolitics and diffusion of military power which have led to the erosion of the US military-technical advantage; and 3) predicts that the battlefield of the future will be dominated by precision munitions, will be far larger than at present, and will make the concealment of military forces very difficult. Finally, he puts forward his ideas on how the US military can adapt to the observed trends and future battlefield to maintain its premier position in the world.
