This essay, which is written by the co-chair of the Dayton peace process that ended the Bosnian Civil War, looks back at the successes and failures of the process and the lessons Europe can learn from the experience. More concretely, the author 1) recalls the difficulties the peace negotiations initially faced; 2) how and when they began to gain traction; 3) the subsequent impact the agreement had; and 4) whether things could have been done differently, prior, during, and after Dayton.
