This brief takes stock of Algeria's current political and economic status and how the country has developed since the start of the Arab Spring. It has, for example, increased its security cooperation with its neighbors and reinforced its internal security apparatus to cope with a variety of threats. Economically, Algerian leaders acknowledge the need for economic reforms, but thus far the latter have been held back by Algeria's complex political dynamics. The brief's author concludes by arguing that the EU and other partners should make a special effort to help diversify Algeria's economy and thereby sustain the country as an important partner against terrorism.
