This report quantifies and analyzes the kidnappings perpetrated by jihadist groups against Westerners in non-Western countries. The text's authors 1) specifically describe the data and methods they used to support their analysis; 2) review global hostage-taking trends over the past four decades; and 3) compare and contrast trends in jihadist kidnappings with those of other non-state actors.
