This paper analyzes the concept of naval presence and how the US Navy's commitment to it affects international security. The text's author specifically examines 1) the practical realities of the concept, both at the micro- and macro-levels; 2) why a more precise definition of the term is necessary; 3) why the contemporary application of presence differs from the past; 4) how global naval presence contributes to security and stability; and 5) how to solve current presence-related problems.
