This brief 1) takes stock of the Ethiopian government’s efforts to deal with internal faith-based violent extremism/sectarian conflict; and 2) contends that it will face difficult policy choices sooner than later, primarily because its systematic interventions have tended to favor established religious authorities. By taking sides, the text's authors conclude, the state has not only compromised its role as a neutral mediator among contending groups, it's also exacerbating communal faith-based conflict.
