This paper explores the tension that exists between maintaining European security and protecting migrants and asylum seekers. As the text's author sees it, the Common European Asylum System has "proven problematic" on two fronts -- it has largely failed to protect asylum seekers and it has actually been counterproductive in managing transnational borders and migration flows. The author closes her analysis by providing recommendations on how to deal with these problems.
