This report takes stock of today's jihadist landscape by looking at the so-called Islamic State (IS), al-Qaeda-linked groups, Boko Haram and other extremist movements. More specifically, the text 1) examines the origins, evolution and geopolitics of the expanding jihadist threat; 2) provides a snapshot of al Qaeda's strategic shift, the evolving identities of different groups, and the state of jihadist (mis)rule; and 3) explores different response options for those fighting the above threat.
