The feature article of this issue of the Sentinel describes how the so-called Islamic State is under increasing military, financial and administrative strain. The issue also includes four other articles on 1) the resiliency of the Somali insurgent-jihadi group al-Shabaab in the face of its own setbacks; 2) rising sectarian tensions and violence in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province; 3) why Scotland has had comparatively fewer problems with violent radicalization than a number of other Western states; and 4) the so-called Islamic State’s efforts to extend its presence into Egypt. Finally, the issue’s interview is with former US Deputy National Security Advisor for Combating Terrorism, Juan Zarate, on the evolution of the terrorist threat and how the US can stem the flow of terrorist financing.
