This brief focuses on the growing interest in next-generation robotic and autonomous defense systems, particularly by nation-states. While exploring this topic, the text’s authors consider 1) to what degree human beings have to be involved in the application of lethal force; 2) why militaries might want to build autonomous weapon systems in the first place; and 3) whether automation increases or decreases human control in the use of hard power.
