This report provides background information on the post-independence history of Nigeria from 1960 until 2006. It states that even while Nigeria strives to assert its political weight across the African continent, widespread corruption and the persistent exploitation of its regional, ethnic and religious fault lines by a ruling elite has thwarted reform and stalled economic development. It further highlights that Nigeria remains dangerously reliant on oil receipts and is mired in patron-client networks while new challenges have arisen, such as inter-communal clashes across the country. The report considers the 2007 presidential elections as a crucial opportunity for a transition to a more stable democracy.
