This report examines the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the run-up to the national elections scheduled for 30 July 2006. According to the authors, the elections are the country's most promising moment since independence. However, they risk creating a large class of disenfranchised politicians and former warlords tempted to take advantage of the country's weakness and launch new insurgencies. In order to avoid renewed violence, they urge the Congolese government and international donors to increase efforts to create a transparent and accountable government.
