This report examines the impact of anti-Boko Haram vigilantism in Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad. More specifically, the report 1) provides a comprehensive historical account of vigilante groups in these countries; 2) analyzes how the groups interact with state agencies and institutions; and 3) assesses the long-term impact and risks associated with this particular type of vigilantism. The text ultimately concludes that despite their ability to improve the overall efficiency of military actions, vigilante groups often provoke Boko Haram attacks rather than deter them.
