This paper summarizes the conference "Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice, Creating Conditions for Peace, Human Rights and the Rule of Law" that took place in October 2005 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland and was organized by swisspeace and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The goal of the conference was to deepen understanding of the issue of transitional justice as a bridge between peace promotion, human rights and the rule of law. The conference focused on guiding principles and ethical issues in connection with transitional justice, and shared lessons learned for best practices in dealing with the past.
