9 Nov 2006

This briefing assesses the fragile situation in Kyrgyzstan after the president signed the new constitution on 9 November 2006. It warns that the confrontation between the government and opposition demonstrators risks deepening into a wider conflict, which could destabilize the Central Asian region. The authors call on the EU, the US, Russia, the UN and the OSCE to take diplomatic initiatives to keep the Kyrgyz parties talking, prevent violence and resolve underlying disputes in the long-term.
