This briefing provides general information on the range and diversity of Islamic activism in the North African states where this phenomenon has been able to develop most fully, namely Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. It outlines the outlook and strategies of the main Islamist movements and organizations, their relations with the state and with each other, and their development in the 1990s. The analysis focuses on the relationship between Islamist activism and violence, including terrorism, and the problem of political reform in general and democratization in particular.
