This report addresses terrorism and Islamic violence in Yemen before the background of international al-Qaida activities. The paper provides information on Yemen’s political and economic background, including its history, economy and politics. Subsequently, the paper explores domestic roots of conflict and reviews external influences, including Saudi-Arabia’s influence and the US war on terrorism. The paper argues that Yemen is not a failed or failing but a fragile state that too strong external pressure could put at risk.
