This report outlines possible scenarios for the political future of Iraq after the end of the US-led invasion in 2003. The paper discusses the social makeup of Iraq as it developed and introduces the neighboring countries’ interests regarding Iraq’s future. Subsequently, the paper reviews opposing views for the post-invasion period and outlines guidelines for a successful transitional administration. The paper argues that it is necessary to accurately understand Iraq’s domestic realities and dynamics and to set up a UN transitional civil authority as soon as possible.
