This report discusses the tensions between and around Syria and Lebanon after the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri. The paper sheds light on the background of the crisis including the US’ involvement and Syria’s increased isolation. Subsequently, the paper addresses Lebanon’s competing domestic political forces and the tensions among them before it goes on to interpret Syria’s policies. Finally, the paper assesses the opportunities and risks of the given situation and calls for the re-establishment of Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and stability including the holding of free elections.
