This briefing analyzes the Macedonian conflict between ethnic Albanians and Slavic Macedonians in 2001. It gives an overview of the violent events, the international community-negotiated solution, and the Albanian and Macedonian visions on the future of the state, respectively. However, the two sides refuse to compromise their contrasting visions of a multiethnic country, and the paper concludes by underlining the fragile status of the country.
