This report examines why it is important for the international community to monitor developments in Yugoslavia’s Sandzak region with its predominantly Muslim population. Particularly, the paper addresses human rights abuses in the region and explains why ongoing repression might yet lead to serious public support for a nationalist Muslim party that may give Belgrade a pretext for intensifying the crackdown. The paper discusses public opinion, demographics, the economic situation, political developments and human and political rights.
