This paper analyzes the nature of the divisions within Croatia’s ruling party, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and the causes and consequences of the turmoil in the party, both for Croatia and for the Croat community in Bosnia. The paper considers the outlook for political change in Croatia, examining both the risk of still greater turmoil in the medium term and the prospects of a stable democracy developing. Furthermore, the paper reviews the HDZ’s development during and after the war and looks at political changes beyond the party.
