This report addresses the course and results of Macedonia’s parliamentary elections of fall 1998 and assesses the consequences of the changed political landscape. The paper looks back and draws lessons from the elections and the formation of the new government. It also looks ahead at the key policy changes facing the new administration and assesses the capacity of the ruling coalition to meet those challenges. The paper argues that the most pressing tasks for the new government are economic reform and inter-ethnic relations.
