This CTC report addresses Abu Hamzah al-Muhajir’s attempts to control al-Qaida in Iraq (AQI) after the death of Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi, the former emir of AQI. According to the author, al-Muhajir’s decision to demonstrate public leadership by calling for an increase in violence is a calculated risk intended to demonstrate his authority and root out informants in his organization.
